In the year she turned nine, the family of Decker lived in Louisiana, where she won an annual regional talent competition with the song Patsy Montana's "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart. Decker relocated to Georgia at the age of fifteen. She had started to write songs and made regular visits to Nashville and visiting record labels and music publishers in search of deals. A representative of the independently-owned label Big Yellow Dog Records heard her at 17 and started selling her songs to various labels. The album she released next, Boys in the Summer, was more country oriented. Decker's album 2 was released under the title Daughter of a Gypsy or Sweet American Dreams was shelved by Mercury and three singles failed in the charts of country music. Decker was removed from her contract.
